The Heartland Institute is libertarian "think tank" supported by tax deductible contributions, under the assumption that it is an educational institution. This article describes a billboard, that it sponsored, in which a well know terrorist makes a statement if favor of climate change. Negative reactions to the billboard caused them to remove the sign. They plan similar billboards that associate Fidel Castro and Obama with efforts to curb global warming.
While the bad taste of this campaign is rather obvious, I am primarily bothered by the fact that this organization is supported by tax exempt contributions. They are clearly not an educational institution. They do not debate the science of climate change, they use propaganda techniques to misinform the public about climate change. The Heartland Institute is one of numerous conservative "think tanks" which are funded with tax exempt contributions by wealthy conservative donors to influence public opinion. Its mission is not to educate. Its mission is political.
