Headline Unemployment Numbers Good But Problems Below the Surface
The headline numbers on jobs created, and the drop in the unemployment rate, are encouraging but there are some looming problems underneath the headline numbers. This article raises concerns about the composition of joblessness. 43.9% have those unemployed have not found work for 27 weeks or more. When, and if they return to work, they will be less productive and have lower incomes. We will be less productive and less competitive. The youth unemployment numbers are also discouraging. 23.2% of those between 16 and 19 are unemployed. There is a risk that many will be unemployable in the future. Underneath the headline numbers we are brewing a bitter potion that may create social, political and economic problems in the future.
