The Argument That The Unemployed Choose Not To Work Dates Back To The Depression

Mark Thoma provides this  link to a chapter from Paul Krugman's latest book.  Conservatives were making the same argument about unemployment that they are making today.  They do not believe that unemployment is involuntary.  More than enough jobs are available.  The unemployed choose not to accept them.

During the Great Depression things were a bit different than they are today.  Popular culture reacted strongly in support of those who were unable to find jobs.  Krugman provides a line given to Humphrey Bogart in the movie classic The Treasure Of Sierra Madre that should be a classic.  Bogie tells the audience why they should not listen to those who claim that there are enough jobs for everyone.
