Why Richard Nixon Was Our Last Liberal President

This is part two of the German interview of James Galbraith.  The topic is US politics, and the decline of liberalism in the US.  Galbraith argues the Nixon was our last liberal president because his policies on healthcare and government spending were to the left of what is left of liberalism in the Democratic Party.  Economists generally believe that competition is a good thing.  That applies to the war of ideas as well as to the battle for market share.  Liberalism in the US was a defense against competition from the Soviet Union in the war of ideas that we call the Cold War.  The collapse of the Soviet Union,  ended the war of ideas and the need for liberal policies that weakened the threat of socialism.
