The Money In The US Solar Industry Is Not In The Panels
This article describes the evolution of the solar industry in the US. Inexpensive solar panels from China, and government subsidies, along with the availability of long term leases, have led to a doubling of installations over the last two years. The profits are going to the mushrooming installation industry and to investors who provide the leases. US solar manufacturers can't compete for the panel business, but jobs are being created in the installation industry. Instead of purchasing the panels, and paying for an expensive installation, homeowners sign a lease agreement which lowers their electric bill. Commercial customers pay up front and take ownership of the equipment, but they benefit from tax breaks.
